This card is similar to a popular card in standard play right now, Siren Stormtamer. The Stormtamer has a lower casting cost, but also must be activated with a single blue mana, and targets only spells that target the player, or a creature. Play Daring Apprentice, and if it survives summoning sickness, you have a transparent counter, putting a stop to big sorceries and such. This might combo well with discard, because the opponent will necessarily start withholding anything they don't want countered. The biggest plus to this card is that once it is established in play, you have a mana free counter, helping you stay setup for control, and allowing you to tap out more mana. Its primary weakness is that it always stands as a mere 1/1 creature, and is vulnerable to more spells than something with higher defense. The petty damage dealers of Rakdos guild, for example, will find it an easy snuff. |
